Walter Crane (1845 1915) is best remembered today as the
illustrator of whimsical stories for children, but in fact he
worked in many styles and genres throughout his life. The son of a
painter, he was apprenticed to a wood engraver at the age of
thirteen, and his father died shortly afterwards. By the time his
apprenticeship was completed, Crane was painting as well as
engraving, and joined the circle of the Pre-Raphaelites, being
especially influenced by the politics of William Morris and the
aesthetics of the Arts and Crafts movement. This highly illustrated
1907 autobiography traces his life from his childhood in Torquay
through the difficult period following his father's death to his
success as an illustrator and decorative artist, describing work,
politics and travel. Crane may have felt that he was not given
recognition as a serious painter, but this engaging account of a
happy life does not show it."
Published in 1896 at the peak of his career, this work by Walter
Crane (1845 1915) was developed from a series of lectures given to
the Society of Arts in 1889. Although chiefly remembered as an
illustrator of books for children, Crane was a versatile and
knowledgeable artist and designer. His practical experience with
book illustration and printing methods gives this text the weight
of considerable authority. A prominent figure in the Arts and
Crafts movement alongside William Morris, he demonstrates here his
understanding of historical techniques of illustration since the
medieval period. Drawing parallels across the ages, Crane notes in
particular how Arts and Crafts aesthetics influenced book
illustration in the late Victorian era. Featuring copious
reproductions of illustrations ranging in date, style, technique
and sophistication, this work reflects Crane's artistic ethos
through the exploration of many examples of exquisite
craftsmanship."

Walter Crane (1845-1915) was one of the earliest contributors to
children's literature and one of the most influential illustrators
in the development of children's colour picture books. Crane began
working for Edmund Evans in 1864 producing bright, colourful
children's books which revolutionised the type of children's books
available. He created a series of 'Toy Books' between 1865-1875
which contained fairy stories, nursery rhymes and other tales of
adventures. His wonderful Japanese influenced illustrations with
their bright, bold, flat colour and black outline never failed to
entertain both children and adults. This book 'The Song Of Sixpence
Picture Book' is one of many 'Toy Books', it contains the stories,
Sing A Song Of Sixpence, Princess Belle Etoile and An Alphabet Of
Old Friends. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly
those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce
and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish
these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions,
using the original text and artwork so these works can delight
another generation of children.
